Why Study the Bible?

Is God the authority of your life? If so, then the Bible should be the ultimate book of authority in your life because the Bible is the word of God. If God is perfect, then the word of God is perfect. “As for God, his way is perfect: The Lord’s word is flawless: He shields all who take refuge in him.” (Psalm 18:30) Jesus said in Matthew 4:4, we don’t “live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”  The Bible does not make mistakes. The Bible says of itself, “The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.” (Psalm 19:7-8)

We should study the Bible because it is the source of Truth. Jesus said “Sanctify them by the truth: Thy word is truth”( John17:17) and “if you continue in my word, you are my disciples and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31-32) Every time you pick up the Bible, you pick up the source of truth. The truth about God, the truth about man, the truth about life, the truth about death, the truth about every part of our existence on earth, and even the truth about eternal life. We need to study the Bible because it is the source of truth.

We should study the Bible because it is the source of Happiness, Joy, Blessing. “The statutes of the Lord are right rejoicing the heart.” (Psalm19:8)  “Blessed is the person that listens to me, watching daily at the doors, waiting at my doorway. For those who find me, find life and receive favor from the Lord.” (Proverbs 8:34-35) Jesus said “Blessed are those that hear God’s word and obey it.” (Luke11:28) If you want to be happy “blessed” listen to God’s word and respond to it.  The person that is not interested in studying the Bible forfeits the tremendous blessing of the Lord.  You must be in the word to experience true Joy, being doers of the word to be blessed by God (James 1:25). Why study the Bible? When you read the word and do the what the word says you will be blessed, full of joy and happiness.

We should study the Bible because the Bible is the source of victory. It is effective and sufficient. The bible is the source of victory over sin, life, and death. The Bible gives life for today and life eternally. We are blessed by learning and doing what the Bible says, it will save our life. “Therefore, get rid of moral filth and the evil that is prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which will save you.” (James 1:21) God’s word goes out, not to return without accomplishing what God wants it to accomplish. (Isaiah 55:11) The word did not only come to you in word, but in power of the Holy Spirit. (1Thessalonians 1:5)  God’s word does what it says it will do.  We must be consistently in the word to be able to use the power of the word, to defeat the enemy, and gain eternal life. We must be committed to the study of the word.

How you respond to the word of God will determine how your life on this earth will go.  How you respond to God’s word will determine your life in eternity.  There is Life in the Word. Jesus said “it is the spirit that gives life, the flesh accomplishes nothing. The words I have spoken are full of spirit and life.” (John 6:63) There is Truth in the word. There is Joy in the word. There are blessings in the word. There is victory over death in the word. Like newborn babies, thirst for the pure milk of the word so that by it you may grow in your salvation. (1 Peter 2:2)  Following the Bible and doing what it says will give you all that and much more.  Pick it up and study the Bible.

I challenge you to take the Josiah covenant.

In 2 Chronicles 34:31, the king Josiah stood in his place and made a covenant before the Lord, to walk after the Lord and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes, with all his heart and all his soul; to perform the words of the covenant that were written in this book.
